ABOUT THE ARTIST: JANINE JUDGE

Janine Judge is an award-winning contemporary textile artist based in Perth, Western Australia. She specialises in freehand machine embroidery, a technique that allows her to bring the striking scenery and fascinating flora and fauna of the world to life through fabric and thread. Using a domestic sewing machine, Janine starts her pieces with eco-dyed or sun-dyed backgrounds, adding fabric collages to outline the main design. The finer details are meticulously crafted with thread painting, resulting in vibrant and realistic artworks.

Janine’s journey into textile art began in her idyllic childhood on a hobby farm near Auckland, New Zealand. Working in her brother-in-law’s dress fabric shop during school holidays sparked her interest in sewing. Although she initially pursued logical subjects like maths and science, her preference for clear, realistic artwork eventually led her to the world of textile art.

In her 20s, Janine traveled extensively, capturing thousands of photos with her husband. These travels provided endless inspiration for her art. After exploring various crafts, she discovered her true passion in textile art through the book “The Art of Landscape Quilting” by Nancy Zieman and Natalie Sewell. Janine’s dedication to creating realistic artwork is evident in her pieces, which are often mistaken for photographs.

Janine aims to bring joy and inspiration through her art, taking viewers on a journey to explore the beauty of the world. Her work evokes memories of places visited and inspires new travel dreams, providing a happy escape from the stresses of daily life.
