
Oil Painting with Ruth Leigh
Join Ruth Leigh for a hands-on oil portrait painting session, where you’ll learn to create a striking portrait from a photograph. Guided by Ruth an experienced oil painter, you’ll begin by exploring essential techniques such as colour mixing, brushwork, and layering to build depth and dimension. Participants are asked to bring a clear, well-lit photograph of themselves or the person they’d like to paint – ideally with strong lighting and a balanced composition. As the session progresses, you’ll apply these skills to bring your chosen image to life on canvas. Whether you’re new to oil painting or looking to refine your technique, this workshop offers a supportive space to experiment and develop your portrait painting practice.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ruth is undergoing a Artist in Residency at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio from 24/03/25 – 11/04/25.
Ruth Leigh is an award-winning artist, writer, and arts facilitator based in the Perth Hills, Western Australia. Primarily a figurative painter, Ruth’s work is deeply inspired by social interactions – ranging from fleeting encounters to long-standing relationships – as well as Western Australia’s vast and varied landscapes and cultural history.
With over a decade of experience in the arts sector, Ruth has worked extensively as a facilitator and project manager across multiple regional and Indigenous arts programs. Her experience working as a studio coordinator at Martumili Artists and Spinifex Hill Studios and facilitating arts workshops across WA has equipped her with a deep understanding of community arts practice and mentorship, making her an invaluable resource for artists seeking guidance in their creative journeys.
