Artist in Residence

Residency: 24/03/25 – 11/04/25

AiR Studio Room, Courthouse Gallery+Studio

We are thrilled to announce renowned artist, Ruth Leigh, will be joining our Artist in Residency program this month (March). This residency aims to create community portraits through life drawing sessions and from images of local residents, encouraging public participation in this unique artistic process. By being live-drawn or bringing a picture into the Courthouse Gallery+Studio, community members can be part of an upcoming exhibition later in 2026 and contribute to the creative process of producing a body of work.

Ruth Leigh is an award-winning artist, writer, and arts facilitator based in the Perth Hills, Western Australia. As a figurative painter, her work is inspired by social interactions and the diverse landscapes and cultural history of WA. With over a decade of experience, Ruth has worked extensively across regional and Indigenous arts programs, gaining deep expertise in community arts practice and mentorship. Her extensive experience facilitating workshops across WA makes her an invaluable resource for artists seeking guidance.

Ruth has a proven track record as a mentor, having worked closely with the Radius 6.0 artists to prepare them for exhibiting in a professional setting at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio. Her mentorship supported the artists in navigating their creative journeys, fostering growth, encouraging innovation, and building confidence, enabling them to refine their practice and gain visibility.

During this residency, Ruth will explore how viewing the subject in different environments and settings can change how they are perceived by the audience. This concept is central to Ruth’s work and will be a key focus during her time with us.

The community are invited to participate and be part of this evolving artistic journey. Whether you choose to be live-drawn or bring a picture, your involvement will contribute to a collective portrait of our regional community. This is a unique opportunity to engage with art in a personal and meaningful way, and to see yourself and your neighbours through the eyes of an observing artist.

During the AiR, the community will be able to meet Ruth, engage in discussions, and learn about the creative process. Ruth will also conduct workshops with the public and various community groups, fostering creativity and artistic expression. This residency is not just about creating art; it’s about building connections, sharing stories, and celebrating our community.

Drawings created during the residency will be kept for the exhibition, but participants can collect their portraits at the end of the exhibition.

Community Exhibition 2026

In 2026, we will host a community exhibition showcasing the portraits created during Ruth Leigh’s residency. This exhibition will explore how place and person can be perceived differently in various settings comparing a person in a photograph to the same person sitting for a live drawing, highlighting how different environments and life experiences influence perception. The exhibition will also provide insight into the creative process, allowing visitors to see the evolution of the artworks from initial sketches to finished pieces.
