ARTIST BIO

“My art practice involves making and connecting with materials. As a maker, tactile response is important and I explore ways of assembling, transforming and thinking with materials and technical processes, their foundations in the lived environment.
Living in the Pilbara for the last 13 years has transformed my art practice. The challenging environment and limited working space encouraged a reassessment of working methods and some old favourite adaptable techniques. Stitch, with is repetitive, rhythmic process and meditative quality is a central element within my work.
The nature and symbolism of stitch and thread creates a connection between my soul and the landscape and culture of the region. I interpret and allow stitch to be a metaphor for connection and repair; darning the traditional owners, the land, history, myself and the future.” – Carrie McDowell
