Artwork Description:

Drawn to the textures of natural materials, I strive to embody timeless elegance with an effortless flow. Inspired by Pilbara industry, I aim to showcase the creative potential of repurposing materials that are abundant in our region.
This body of work transforms recycled rain gear, high-vis vests, and zippy ties into fully functional and wearable evening wear. These industry-discarded garments, often overlooked, hold unique potential.
By turning them into unexpected pieces, I challenge perceptions and highlight the innovative use of materials that are plentiful in Hedland.
For this outfit, the skirt is crafted from raincoats, with a frill made from high-vis vests. Piping from the vests highlights the design, and zippy ties are used for the boning. The headpiece, earrings, and ring are also crafted from zippy ties. This fully wearable work fits a size 10.
Through my work, I hope to inspire others to see the unexpected beauty in everyday materials and celebrate the creative possibility.

PEOPLE'S CHOICE

ARTIST BIO

Sharon Gosling is a talented seamstress and designer based in Port Hedland, Western Australia. Known for her refined, resort-style aesthetic, Sharon creates garments that embody timeless elegance and effortless flow, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and natural fibres. She gravitates toward linen and cotton, appreciating their texture, tone, and harmony with the environment.

Originally from Warragul, Victoria, Sharon’s passion for sewing began early. As a teenager, she often altered her own clothes – hemming pants and replacing buttons – which sparked a lifelong love for garment making. By the age of 15, she was already designing and sewing clothes for herself and others. Though primarily self-taught, Sharon further honed her skills through various TAFE courses between the ages of 17 and 25, focusing on fashion, children’s clothing, and pattern making.

Her artistic journey has included participation in the Sunshine Coast Fashion Awards at age 19, where she won a student category with a joint entry. Sharon has also showcased her work at numerous markets and festivals across the Pilbara and Kimberley regions, including the Pilbara Fashion Festival and the Bazaar Makers Market at Fremantle Arts Centre in 2020.

Sharon’s designs are practical yet elegant, with a colour palette inspired by the natural beauty of the Pilbara – particularly its soft greens and pinks. She employs classic sewing techniques, enriched with fine details, to create versatile pieces that suit all body types.

Now expanding her creative horizons, Sharon continues to explore new opportunities to exhibit her work and share her passion for sustainable, beautifully crafted fashion.
