Artist statement: Words are powerful. They can be used to indoctrinate and make us believe (almost) anything. I like the quote by James Baldwin, “The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers”. This subtly subversive work of asemic writing fuses text and image. A gestural engagement that offers alternative readings, across cultural understandings.
Materials and techniques: Wet-felted mulberry silk paper and fine Merino wool fibres. Freehand machine stitching using commercial thread and cotton fabric backing. Quill feather.
