Artist statement: Dark Oculus captures Australia's nocturnal allure, celebrating its expansive dark skies. Inspired by Rome's Pantheon, the quilt reverses the iconic oculus, inviting darkness rather than light. The piece explores the relationship between land and sky, melding ancient architecture with the mystique of Southern Hemisphere nights. So is there nothing out there or a lot of nothing out there?
Materials and techniques: Cotton fabric. Freehand cutting and improvisational piecing. Densely quilted on a domestic machine.
