My Body My Choice
Product Details
A contemporary representation of the myth of Leda and the Swan, from Leda's perspective. Not to be the victim as has been written, but from a modern-day cry for choice, reproductive rights and consensual relationships. The original myth typified cruel behaviour concealed beneath a beautiful swanlike appearance, beauty being the facade. I have subverted the classical narrative-Leda is no longer the submissive character and Zeus (the swan) no longer has power over her.
“I like it when I get a physical reaction from people when they view my art. The whimsy, fun and
sometime political nature of life is evident in my work from time to time. The expressionist nature of my
work tries to blur the edges of reality and hopefully makes people smile, wonder and to think and create
conversation like squeezing a bit of lemon juice into a cut.”

Karen Chappelow is an expressionist artist and sculptor who offers a daring commentary on contemporary
society. She draws heavily from history, anthropology, mythology, and pop culture in a way that
overthrows original gender dynamics and hands the reins of control back to women, or the oppressed,
unapologetically adding a twist of sassy humour to the mix.
She has been sculpting and painting for more than 20 years and has collectors around the world. Karen
has been exhibiting in Western Australia for many years.
Karen’s inspiration comes from her favourite artists Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and the Expressionist
period.
Karen has exhibited in numerous galleries around the world, including a sold-out show at Agora Gallery in
New York and in Europe throughout 2022, Luxembourg, Madrid, Berlin, Rome, Sweden and Art Lovers
Australia Gallery in Melbourne, and in conjunction with Art Lovers Australia and “The Block” a major
renovation show appearing on Channel 9 and in House 1-Living and Dining. Finishing 2023 with a
successful solo exhibition in Canberra. 2024 began with numerous exhibitions in Melbourne and a group
show in Berlin. Finishing 2024 with a successful solo exhibition -The Paradox of Duality in Perth, WA, 2025 begins with 2 consecutive exhibitions in Melbourne and Sweden in May.
