Artist statement: This work tells two stories. First, the role of women in society has changed dramatically, many men found this change difficult.Second, men often define themselves by what they do, rather than who they are. “I’m an accountant, I’m a salesman”. After retirement that identity disappears, and they struggle to replace it. This is Relevance Deprivation.
Materials and techniques: Salvaged shirts and ties, discarded sheet. Variations on Log Cabin and Rail Fence traditional quilt blocks, with layers held together throughout with shirt buttons. Machine pieced and appliqued.
