Drawn to the shoreline, this work reflects life’s turbulence and the gifts it offers up through the rhythmic cycle of waves. Four handwoven forms, made with Austrian paper twine, copper wine and embroidery thread, are created using a repetitive, meditative random weave process.

Jody Loaring is an Australian visual artist who since 1992 has produced numerous award-winning sculptures with works held in public and private collections. A graduate of the Edith Cowan University and a Visual Arts lecturer at NRTAFE in Western Australia, her multidisciplinary approach involves assembling and constructing sculptural and mixed media works, often sourcing raw materials directly from the environment, and combining them with manufactured materials. Her family history and personal life experiences feed the thematics of her artworks. Jody's process begins with gathering as she explores environments such as the shoreline, looking for interesting textures she can use in her artworks. She collects natural fibres such as driftwood and grass fibres, as well as recycled discarded nylon beach rope. Jody draws inspiration from the collected materials with their beauty and natural colouration. She combines these with other manufactured fibres, metals, plaster or ceramic to create sculptural works that may stand on a handmade armature bases or exist independently in space.
In her works, Jody explores themes including origins, memory, spirit, and place, which often delve into topics of family, trauma and home, fostering an ongoing dialogue of identity and place within the Australian experience.
