Threads of Kalamina
Product Details
Threads of Kalamina" is a mixed-media textile piece inspired by the photo taken by Aussie Coastal Dreaming of Kalamina Gorge in Karijini National Park, Western Australia. Using a combination of embroidery, painting, and fabric, the artwork captures the gorge’s striking contrast between deep blue water and the rich red earth.
Set within an embroidery hoop, the piece blends hand-dyed cotton, watercolour, acrylic paint, and fine liner with embroidery and tapestry threads to bring the landscape to life. The rugged cliffs and winding waterway are stitched with silk and tapestry thread, adding texture and depth. Small glass beads highlight areas of vegetation, while fine liner details mimic the scattered spinifex dotting the landscape.
The artwork reflects the natural beauty of the Pilbara region, showcasing its bold colours and unique textures. By combining traditional embroidery techniques with painting, it offers a fresh perspective on this iconic Australian landscape.
Justine Gorges is an emerging artist based in the Pilbara, where she has lived since 2008. Deeply
inspired by the region’s dramatic landscapes, she explores the textures, colours, and contrasts of the
Australian outback through multimedia art. Her work blends painting, textiles, and intricate
embroidery, creating unique, tactile interpretations of the natural world.
With a passion for experimentation, Justine combines traditional and contemporary techniques,
working with materials such as watercolour, acrylic, hand-dyed fabrics, and thread. Her pieces often
reflect the rugged beauty of the Pilbara, capturing its vast open spaces, rich red earth, and resilient
flora.
As her artistic journey evolves, Justine continues to push creative boundaries, drawing inspiration
from the land around her, while developing a distinctive style that merges fine art with textile
craftsmanship.
