Artist statement: Admiring Japanese Sashiko running stitch technique set me on the trail of creating a quilted map. For me, a solid continuous mark created with backstitch worked well, showing the streets that I have walked to reach Fremantle, with various hand stitches added to indicate the actual routes walked to reach the centre.
Materials and techniques: On hand-dyed charcoal coloured fabric, layered with a thin wadding, cream-coloured backstitches trace the streets through South Fremantle to Fremantle with different coloured stitches added.
