Artwork Description:
This is a painting of my nine year old daughter Lacey. By age two she had endured multiple surgeries and months of chemotherapy to treat her cancer. At such a crucial age for development she was confined within hospital walls. Once she was in remission we initiated a plan to travel around Australia, immersing ourselves in the natural world, and hoping to let go of her identity as a sick child. I’ll always wonder how these experiences at such a young age have influenced and shaped who she is today, and who she will become. In my painting I chose to depict Lacey lying peacefully in a safe and dreamlike state on one of the beaches we visited during our travels. I hope that despite the trauma of her time spent in hospital, that the good times that followed have helped with her healing to balance out the bad. The world is still a beautiful and loving place she can feel safe in.

ARTIST BIO
b.1981 in Perth Western Australia.
Laura Griffith is a contemporary realist landscape and portrait artist, who lives and works out of her home studio in Cowaramup Western Australia. She has a BA in Fine Art from Curtin University graduating in 2003, where she majored in painting and life drawing. Laura moved to the Margaret River Region in 2008, eventually settling in the town of Cowaramup with her husband and young daughter.
Laura’s current art practice moves between Australian
landscapes and portraiture/figurative work, with a focus on
themes of connection to place and the healing aspects of
spending time immersed in the natural world. Laura explores the use of colour, light and atmosphere to evoke an emotional response in the viewer, and often works with soft brushstrokes using many thin layers of paint and a dry brush technique.
Laura has been a finalist in several art prizes and recently won first place in the Ludlow Art Prize for Australian Landscape Painting.
